February on the Internet
So, who exactly are ‘people like’ Harry Styles who don’t often win recognition for their talent or projects? Good-looking white men? Or, was he referring to children from single-parent households with no connections in the industry before their careers? At the start of February, the singer, songwriter, and actor (?) accepted his Grammy by saying ‘this doesn’t happen to people like me very often’. It was met with a bit of confusion, with many taking the view of “I can’t think of a type of people this happens for more.” The speech also landed wrongly with fans who saw his win over Beyoncé, a black woman who continually keeps getting pipped to the post in the category, as misplaced and frankly, false.
Beyoncé announced her Renaissance Tour at the beginning of February, and fans clamoured to get tickets, some even accepting shows abroad when their locals sold out. The inflated prices of hotels around the areas where she is performing on the surrounding nights (known as price gouging) were eye-wateringly noticeable, as fans called for some sort of legislation to prevent the exploitation of people needing accommodation on certain nights. Cardiff hotel prices for the 17th of May, the day when Beyoncé performs there increased by 166% from the same day last year, making the city the most expensive place to stay on that in the UK.
On the note of performances, Rihanna’s Super Bowl half-time show of a compilation of her most recognised tracks, she received around 103 pages of complaints for her gyrating, her crotch-grabbing, her finger-sniffing, and crude lyrics. Most people, however, were happy to see her performing again with the insanely choreographed backup dancers, and, iconically, promoting her makeup line Fenty Beauty by touching-up mid-performance. She also appeared with her Son and ASAP Rocky in Vogue, and it weirdly ruffled some feathers with people who thought the cover to be depicting ASAP’s submissiveness. Also, King Charles is struggling to book an artist for their coronation, with the likes of The Spice Girls, Adele, and Ed Sheeran have all turned it down.
Ariana DeBose honoured female actresses in a rap that she performed at the Bafta Awards. ‘Angela Basset did the thing’ became an infamous takeaway from the evening, and although it has since been honoured by Basset herself in her acceptance speech at the NAACP Image Awards, DeBose at first deactivated her Twitter account after the performance.
Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly were rumoured to have broken up as she deletes all their photos from his Instagram and posted with the caption "You can taste the dishonesty / It's all over your breath". Speaking of breakups, among the most played Spotify tracks on Valentine’s were ‘Kill Bill’ (“I just killed my ex”) by SZA, and the self-love anthem ‘Flowers’ by Miley Cyrus. Casa Amor also returned on Winter Love Island and Liam Court’s legacy remains; lads holiday mentality but then not recoupling with a Casa-Girl.
